11 Jan Newmarket Gymnastics Club launches into 2018
Only a few months after the future of The Newmarket Gymnastics Club was left in the balance after losing its base at the former Scaltback Middle School – We are very pleased to officially announce that its 170+ members can now proudly call The Racing Centre its new home. After an open evening to launch its new headquarters last month, the club is now up and running and we have been delighted to see so many new faces in the centre enjoying all of our facilities.
Racing Centre General Manager Tom Lee says. ‘We are delighted to have been able to secure the future of the Newmarket Gymnastics Club. It was vitally important for the club to stay in central Newmarket. Our location (on Fred Archer Way), modern facilities and viewing gallery here at The Racing Centre made this the perfect venue for them not only to continue but indeed flourish for many years to come. We are already planning our first social event here to take place under our indoor marquee with music, games and our bouncy castle at the ready for the youngest members of the club”
The Gymnastics Club join the hugely successful New Astley Boxing club, a club that under the tutelage of ABA coaches Mark O’Reilly, Saeed Kobeissi and their team of loyal volunteers have not only provided a safe, fun learning environment for hundreds of youngsters over the years, has also produced national champions and currently has one member training for the Commonwealth Games. Both clubs will be training twice a week at the centre here on Fred Archer Way.
Tom Continued “We feel it is sending out a great message to Newmarket that with both clubs now being under the same roof, 300+ children and young adults are now visiting the centre benefitting from our facilities. It’s great to play our part in positively affecting the lives so many children and their families.
The Racing Centre is a community hub for all of Newmarket to use and this is the first of many new partnerships being formed here. We look to announce an extended programme of physical, social and educational initiatives for residents of Newmarket very soon.
Chairperson of Newmarket Gymnastics Club Nicki Negus and Secretary Sally Wallace would like to thank everyone in the community for their support of their club over the past few months. “After the disappointment of finding out in the summer that our home at Scaltback was to be demolished we are excited to have moved into our new venue at The Racing Centre ready to open in the New Year. We are able to hire the hall twice a week at our normal time slots reducing disruption to our gymnasts and families. We are very grateful to Tom and the team for coming forward and offering us a solution and for undergoing construction work to accommodate our large quantity of equipment and were delighted that we could contribute half the cost to this work to benefit us all. A huge thank you to the council who also pledged £500 to the cost and extended our time at Scaltback to December so we only had to close over the Christmas period”
Cllr Andy Drummond, Forest Heath District Council Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture said, ‘I am very pleased that Forest Heath has been able to play a part in supporting this excellent club’s work, so that no opportunities for physical activity are lost to the community.’
Nicki added “Tom and his team have been so welcoming even providing a fun introduction evening before Christmas to welcome all our families before we commenced in the New Year. They are now able to enjoy all of the facilities at The Racing Centre while we continue to provide fun gymnastic sessions for over 170 children. Everyone has been so supportive in ensuring the club would not have to close including our wonderful coaches, gymnasts and their families who have been so positive about the move. Thank you to Mark Cross from Burwell ,who provided the lorry, and the volunteers who helped us with the difficult task of moving all of our equipment on a snowy Sunday morning. We have re-opened, our future is secure once more and we can get on with the important task of providing as many children as possible in the Newmarket area the opportunity to participate in the sport of gymnastics.”
